Strong EU targets for new cars and CO2
Driving the Change
We have been part of an EU-wide coalition of green groups working on the 'Driving the Change' campaign since 2008.
Working in each of our countries, we put pressure on the EU to pass a law requiring carmakers to meet strict CO2 targets for all new cars sold.
Through media events, video outreach, and public pressure, we raised the profile of the EU proposal for car emissions targets.
In December 2008, the Cars & CO2 Regulation was passed obliging car manufacturers to meet CO2 emissions targets of 130g/km by 2015 and 95 g/km by 2020 for new vehicles produced.
There is still much work to be done to ensure that car manufacturers are complying with targets and that the regulation is being enforced.
Greenpeace has taken up this issue across Europe this year, with their excellent 'Dark Side' campaign to pressure Volkswagen (one of the car companies putting the least effort into meeting this targets) to clean up its act.
